best drone under 200 dollars reviews

Finding the best quadcopter on a 200 US Dollar budget is not an easy task since there are plenty of good contenders out there. We managed to narrow our choice to a select few models which, we feel, offer the best feature set, which was up until recently, reserved only for higher end models. At this price range, we found the drones which offered more advanced features and they are built to an entirely different specification when compared to the lower priced ones.

When considering what you can get for less than 200 bucks keep in mind that this can net you a competitive FPV racer drone or a capable aerial video recording machine instead. One would think that these quadcopters are exclusively built for experienced flyers but that would be wrong. Beginners can find them easy to fly and manoeuvre too. That way you get a nice drone to start with and when you learn flying a bit more then you can turn on the advanced flying mode. All these drones perform great once they are up in the air.

The first thing that we can tell you about F181 RC drone is that it performs great once it’s up in the air. The acrobatic agility is amazing and even though it stresses the motors quite a bit we just couldn’t help ourselves. It was just too much fun watching it do flips and rolls. The altitude function works very well and we suspect that there is a barometric sensor built in that allows the quadcopter to hold steady at a predefined flight height. There are 4 modes of flying to choose from and the lowest 25 percent one is intended for beginners. Ramping it up to 100 percent will require some serious drone flying knowledge first. The batteries will last for around 8 minutes on average.

The HD camera works as advertised and offers a decent quality of video recording as well as 2-megapixel image resolution for those who prefer photos more than videos. This is a wonderful camera drone with great flying performance and it is sold at a reasonably affordable price.

DBPOWER UDI U842 Predator – Fun and easy to Operate

UDI U842 is a fancy named quadcopter made by DBPOWER that is equipped with an FPV real-time HD video quality transmission system. The “Predator” offers some really interesting features which we didn’t expect to find at this price tag. Those of you who are looking to buy a great quality FPV racing drone under 200 USD should look no further.

Once we connected the Predator with our mobile phone via the app, we activated the “gravity induction system” as the manufacturer terms the cell phone control function. The gyroscope from our mobile phone acted as a direction controller and sent the position and heading data using the app to operate the drone. This is a great way to fly it and we recommend it for beginners.

Unfortunately, due to it being lightweight, we can’t recommend flying the quadcopter on a windy day. Other than that, it is very fast and turns great so there is plenty of enjoyment of watching it zoom across the sky. It performs flips and rolls with almost no effort at all and the motors allow for a fast climb rate. With some heavy manoeuvring, we managed a good 15 minutes of flight time out of a single battery which is great. We were warned by the alarm that it is time for battery swap or recharging. The full charge takes around 2 hours.

The included 4GB Micro SD card is great when you want to store your HD flight video and photo recordings although this eats up the battery faster. Overall this is a great FPV drone with great flying and media capturing capability.

DBPOWER UDI U818A – Perfect for Beginners

We had another great camera quadcopter on our testbed and this time it is the UDI U818A Wi-Fi FPV model by DBPOWER. It combines the functionality to record high definition videos as well as offering a first-person viewpoint of the flying.

As with the previously tested model, the U842, this one also includes a gravity induction system type of control which works by using the mobile phone app and the devices inbuilt gyroscope. A great feature for quadcopter beginners.

Specs:

Drone size: 13.4 x 13 x 3.6 inches

Drone weight: 0.35 pounds

Built-in 6-axis gyroscope for precise hovering in the sky

Real-Time HD FPV transmission over Wi-Fi

Gravity induction system – direction heading control

Headless safety function

2 high capacity batteries included

Operating range up to 80 meters

Low-battery warning alarm

HD video and picture recording

Safety LED lights

Retail package:

  • DBPOWER UDI U842 Predator quadcopter
  • 4GHz Remote controller
  • USB charging cable
  • 2 x 7.4V 700 mAh Li-PO Batteries
  • 4 x Rotating blade propellers
  • 4GB Micro SD card
  • User Manual

Once we paired the quadcopter with our mobile phone app it was easy to fly it around and make it do some fine acrobatic aerial flips. This lightweight drone moves fast across the sky so make sure to turn carefully as it has a very fast movement rate in all directions. Also, make sure not to fly it when it is windy outside. It is far too light and you may lose it easily. The motors seem way too powerful for the lightweight frame even with the attached camera system. This makes flying this drone so much fun.

The battery will last for around 10 minutes of flight time and even though it uses a 7.4 Volt battery it gets drained quickly since the FPV system uses a lot of juice. When it comes to video transmission quality we can rate it as being nice and usable. The video is recorded in HD 720p resolution so it looks nice when being watched on a TV afterwards. Users can make photos too alongside videos during flight. The included 4GB Micro SD card offers more than enough space for all of your media recordings.

This is the agilest FPV drone we tested at this price range so we can safely recommend it to some fun looking drone flyers.

Conclusion

Out of the bunch, these three models truly stand out from the rest of the competition on the market. If we had to pick the best one out of them then the winner is the Holy stone F181 model. Its unique altitude hover mode is rarely seen at sub 200 USD price range and it allowed us to make some great looking scenery videos and photos.

It also has great flying characteristics and more importantly, the battery lasts long even when recording is on. The 4-channel band for the remote control prevents any possibility of losing contact with the quadcopter which plagues many of the cheaper models on the market.

As for DBPOWER models on our test, both U842 and U818A are great for FPV users who prefer a racer type of quadcopters. Although similarly priced they offer same onboard FPV equipment. The main difference is in battery sizes and endurance and of course the different weight. So no matter which one of these you choose you can’t go wrong if you’re looking for a fast racer type drones.
