The “FPV” is short for “First Person View for those of you who are unfamiliar with this meaning often found in the designation of the popular quadcopters. The model that we tested is made by DBPOWER and it is a novice pilot friendly MJX X400W drone.
This compact flyer comes with an onboard camera designed to be paired with a mobile device display or a 3D VR headset in order to offer a real-time video of the flight. This affordable drone offers great flying experience when the VR headset is used. It offers a hard-to-describe “as if you are actually flying yourself” sensation.

We’ve already mentioned that the MJX X400W is a compact drone. It is also nicely built flying machine that offers good build quality and a decent toughness level thanks to the flexible plastic its body is made of. The included propeller guards will keep beginner operators from damaging rotors and offer a decent level of protection for head-on collisions that may happen. The red accents and the black cabin paint are nice details on the white colour body of the quadcopter.
The LED safety lights are a nice touch and they help users discern the front end from the rear when flying at a range. We wish that MJX X400W had different colours of the front and the back propellers for easier distinction so the added lights compensate for that, although, they can be hard to see at greater distances if it is really bright outside.
They do come in handy if you are flying at night as they make the quadcopter easy to spot and orient during flight in darkness. All that make this quadcopter affordable price drone.
As for the flying performance, we can report that it is fun and very satisfying. The drone is easy to control and it speeds across the sky with ease. The climb and turn rates are exceptional for a quadcopter of this size and they will guarantee fun flying sessions even to experienced users. The MJX X400W showed great stability during our tests in windy conditions and thanks to the 6-axis gyroscope it managed to hover in a stable horizontal position although there was some small lateral movement because of the higher wind speed.
The FPV function works and performs great and we attached on the remote our smartphone with the preinstalled app that displayed a live stream video transmission coming from the onboard camera. The 3D mode in the app enables users with Google’s Cardboard virtual reality headsets to enjoy the immersive feeling of flying. The recording of photos and videos can be toggled via the app too with the on-screen toggles. The included camera offers HD 720p resolution videos which are decent and of satisfactory quality. Both videos and photos come out sharp and nice looking.
Headless Flight System
The “headless” function mode is great for beginner users and it limits the X400W to move in a two-way direction which eases the flying control even further. There are standard acrobatic features included so that the quadcopter can perform rolls and flips with a press of a button. We managed to fly the drone really far away and even exceeded the manufacturers claim of 100 meters of range although we do not advise users of doing the same in stronger wind conditions.
The included battery is rated by the manufacturer as being high capacity although, during our testing, it seemed to manage to provide only 8 minutes of flight time at best. Thankfully the spare batteries are not difficult to find online nor are they expensive. In case you’d like to stick with only the included one you will have to contend with the charging time of over an hour in order to get it back to full capacity.
